Tackle core issues to deal with terrorism

Kerala is forced to step up vigil in view of terror threats. The security measures include evacuation of people from beaches and parks, cancellation of film shows, vehicle checks and so on. Do these steps provide a sense of security to the common man? Our readers respond:

Necessary steps

Terrorism has assumed grave proportions. Major cities in the country have been witnessing terror strikes and all important places are under a constant threat. In the light of these threats, the State is forced to step up vigil. In my opinion, security measures like evacuations and cancellation of film shows are necessary to provide security to the common man. There is no conventional method to meet terror attacks. Terrorists strike in different ways and security agencies have to evolve counter-strategies. Predominantly, there is a growing sense of insecurity all around. Laxity in security will invite dangers. Checking the veracity of terror threats can only be a secondary affair. Precautionary measures like evacuations are but very vital even if it causes inconveniences to the public.

Root out the menace

The police and the security agencies have been doing a commendable job in recent months. The common man is always happy to cooperate with the security agencies. Being a daily commuter, I could sense the increased vigil at railway stations. It is a relief to the common man who is bombarded with reports of terror threats from across the country. Maintaining a state of high security for a long time is impractical. We should, as a country, take steps to root out the menace. Keeping the public away from cinemas and beaches cannot be a regular affair. So we should find a solution to the core problems involved.

Resolve core issues

Steps taken by the government to provide security to the common man deserves praise. But the core issues remain unresolved. There should be strong political will to take action against terrorism. Terrorism has been inflicting damage on us on various counts. We spent crores of rupees to maintain our armed forces. We lose many lives every year. Unless we find a permanent solution by addressing the core issues everything done in the direction would be futile. The public should come forward to contain violence.

Public involvement

The steps initiated by the Central and State governments should come in for praise. Terrorists have always targeted crowded and economically sensitive places. We should cooperate with the authorities to contain terrorism. We can enjoy films and the beauty of the beaches only if we are safe.

Preparedness needed

In the present scenario, the State and the Union governments deserve appreciation for stepping up security and providing adequate security to the public. We cannot be lax. We have to gear up for more such threats. The government should set up a special; machinery to deal with such situations. The wing should have capabilities at all levels. There should be politicians for decision making, officials for policy making and enough personnel on the ground for action.

Cooperate

With out the cooperation of local people, it is impossible to flush out terrorists. Government should make an appeal to the people in this regard. We also need special laws like POTA because ordinary laws are time-consuming and have a lot of loopholes. Tthe government should recruit educated and energetic youngsters to form a special task force to tackle terrorism.

Social security

Kerala, a densely populated State in India, makes itself susceptible to terrorist attacks. Beaches, parks and cinema theatres are always thronged with people.

These places are easily accessible for terrorists too. Evacuation of people from these places when terrorists are on their prowl helps to reduce the causalities in case of a blast.

It also helps the bomb squad to ferret out the hidden bombs in these areas. Thanks to our deft and adroit security forces who became successful in diffusing many bombs.

Bomb threats

Just after the serial bomb blast there at Bangalore, Kerala was at the peak point of threat. The bomb blast that panicked and rattled the routine lives of the bustling and busy city of Bangalore might be the reason that made people of Kerala too, in a state of panic.

After a threat whatever seems to come in front of the police eye would be a suspectable piece. For instance, in the Kannur district, two batteries were connected with the help of wires at the rooftop of a telephone exchange. But that was a battery facility being used by the railway telecommunication department. The government cannot stay still at such threats that were a wise decision if the threat was expected to be a genuine one.

Remain vigilant

Gujarat, then Bangalore and finally Kerala was also under terror threat.

Security measures should not be the after-effect of a threat. Every State should have its own security measures to protect their masses within. But in a State like Kerala security measures will not be of any help without the cooperation of the people. Emptying a place is rather an easy task rather than promising security.

The common man, at the same time, should not be put to hardships. Let us not create hurdles in the progress of a State which is already faced by ‘threats’ like hartals and bandhs. Coordinated action by all agencies concerned is the answer.

The police should strengthen intelligence gathering. Terrorists should not view the State as an ‘easy area’ for their operations. The public will always be ready to support any initiative in this regard.

Use technology

Increased number of terror threats has a traumatic effect on society. Steps like evacuation cannot be long-term steps. In this age of technology, the government should counter terrorism by using the appropriate technology.
