“Universalise PDS to control price rise” PUDUCHERRY: The Central unions will go on a nationwide strike on August 20 to put forward various demands including control of rising prices, proper implementation of labour laws and a social security law for unorganised workers. The unions in a release said price rise should be controlled through universalising the Public Distribution System and preventing irregularities in the trade of essential commodities. Among other demands, the unions wanted the loans obtained by farmers from private persons waived and contractual appointment of labour abolished. Employees of Central and State governments, Departments of Posts, Railway, banks and insurance firms had declared their support to the strike, the release said. Meanwhile, the Confederation of Pondicherry State Government Employees’ Associations in a release said it would go on a strike the same day along with affiliated units in all regions of the Union Territory including those in local bodies, cooperative institutions and government undertakings. In its charter of demands, the confederation demanded a ban on futures and forward trading in all essential commodities, reduction of tax on petrol and diesel and action against hoarding and black marketing. The confederation also demanded removal of negative and discriminatory features in the recommendation of Sixth Pay Commission and finalising the same for implementation in consultation with employees’ organisations.
