Police awareness programme for youths

Staff Reporter

INTERACTION: Students who visited the Tirugokarnam police station in Pudukottai.

PUDUKOTTAI: Fifty students of H.H. The Rajah’s College here were off their daily academic schedule recently but were quite busy with a purpose - of understanding the tough responsibilities of police personnel.

They visited a few police stations; attended short lecture sessions by police officers and interacted with them during an exclusive question- hour and group discussion.

At the end of the day, they appeared quite convinced of the role of these personnel in manning every aspect in and around the town -- from traffic regulation to law and order; from domestic violence and civil disputes to registering petitions and investigation techniques.

The students, including 25 girls, formed the first batch of the monthly programme of the ‘Awareness programme to students on policing’ -- an innovative programme introduced by the police administration to expose the students to police department, in batches, every month.

“Sensitising the students to the functioning of the police department will not only instil in them a sense of confidence about our personnel but also go a long way in shaping the character of our future nation-builders,” says Superintendent of Police P. Moorthi.

“The system was put in place in the wake of the ignorance of a good number of citizens even about the organisational hierarchy of our department, leave alone the functioning of the police department and its limitations,” he said.

The programme aimed at creating awareness among the students about the fundamental laws governing the safety and security of every citizen, and allied regulations.

A eleven-point schedule _ with relevant background papers containing the details of the organisational hierarchy of the department; general functions; general and fundamental laws; traffic regulations _ was chalked out.

The students visited the police station at Tirugokarnam, the all-woman police station, the armed reserve wing and the traffic police station.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tiruchi Range, Sandeep Rai Rathore, gave away certificates to the participants. He appreciated the special efforts taken by the police department in shaping the youth right.

“This will be a regular feature every month. Students from various colleges will be exposed to our department in a phased manner,” Mr. Moorthi said.
