“Private car parking inside schools not feasible”

Staff Reporter

A delegation calls on MCD Standing Committee chairman

NEW DELHI: A delegation of the National Progressive Schools Conference led by its chairman S. L. Jain called on Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta on Thursday to demand postponement of the civic body’s proposal for parking of private vehicles inside school premises, .

Citing limited space in public schools as the primary reason for demanding that the proposal be put on hold, Mr. Jain said: “Schools are allotted only two acres for constructing the school building as well as providing playfields along with an open area for students. If parking of private vehicles in school campus is implemented then they would be unable to provide space for games, sport activities and similar facilities. Instead of playfields there would be cars parked in schools.”

Security of students

“Moreover, the school management and staff are not trained to handle and manage parking of vehicles as traffic management is essentially the responsibility of the Government and traffic police. Besides, free movement of vehicles inside school premises would mean compromising with security of students who would be exposed to accidents,” he added.

Working out an arrangement with the traffic police and parents to pick and drop children at specific points outside the school and asking parents to opt for car pools were some suggestions mooted by the delegation to overcome the parking problem.

Keeping the issue of children’s security in mind, Mr. Gupta assured the delegation that their request would be considered before arriving at a final decision.

“We have decided to review the proposal in the wake of the demands put forth by the delegation. Parking is a big problem and we would continue to consider the point of views of all affected parties in this matter including parents and the Delhi police,” said Mr. Gupta.
