Thiruvananthapuram: Wedding bells will soon ring at the short-stay home for destitute women set up by the Kerala State Women’s Commission at Vattiyoorkavu in Thiruvananthapuram. At a simple ceremony on August 21, Geetha, one of the inmates, will get married to Anil, an autorickshaw driver. It was almost a year back that Geetha’s mother Chandrika sought refuge at the short-stay home to escape the wrath of her husband, a chronic alcoholic. Using her meagre earnings as a domestic help, she ensured that her daughter completed the SSLC. Moved by her mother’s plight, Geetha decided to wind up her education even though she secured a first class in the exam. According to J.M. Rahim, secretary, Thiruvananthapuram District Sarvodaya Mandalam, the short-stay home is getting ready to celebrate the marriage. All the inmates, including the young and the old, have pooled their savings to buy gold for the bride. Superintendent of the home Mini Jose is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the couple have a smooth journey through life. She is spearheading an effort to mobilise resources for the groom to purchase an autorickshaw for himself. Two of Geetha’s aunts and a few of her neighbours have come forward to support the move. They have approached the Sarvodaya Mandalam, Lions Club and other voluntary organisations for assistance. The Women’s Commission is also making an all out effort to make the wedding ceremony a memorable one.
