NEW DELHI: Union Communications Minister A. Raja has expressed serious concern at the slow growth of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). He has directed the Department of Telecom to work out a mechanism to expedite important decisions. In a letter to Telecom Secretary Siddartha Behura, the Minister said the slow growth of business was despite regular review meetings with BSNL officials. “It is a serious matter and it has to be monitored and reviewed by the Secretary on a regular basis.” The Minister felt that BSNL failed to pick up on the value-added services in spite of financial incentives and business leverage. BSNL could get much more revenue from such services if it was able to take quick decisions. “A large number of proposals for value-added services on a revenue-sharing basis, in which no investments are required from BSNL, are pending with the PSU for long. BSNL may be directed to look into such proposals on a priority basis and in a time-bound manner,” the Minister’s letter pointed out.
