Three meet records set

Coimbatore: Three new meet records were set on the opening day of the 20th South Zone junior athletic championship at the Nehru Stadium on Friday.

T. Manisha of Tamil Nadu threw the spear to a distance of 35.17m for a new javelin record in the under-16 girls’ section. She thus erased her own mark of 32.18m set last year.

In the under-18 category, G.M. Aishwarya of Karnataka jumped to a new distance of 6.01m and shattered the old mark of 5.74m set by her State-mate Shilpa Sundar in 2004.

The other record that fell by the wayside came in the under-18 boys’ 1,500m. K. Ramesh of Andhra Pradesh stopped the clock at 4:05:0s and broke a decade old record set by Sammaiah of AP in Pondicherry.
