Dilawar beats Irshad, takes title

KOCHI: After losing four consecutive finals against Alappuzha’s Anas Irshad, Mishal Dilawar turned out to be lucky on his home table in the Brahmijam RSC all-Kerala table tennis tournament at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium, Kadavanthra, on Friday evening.

Dilawar, a student of Vidyodaya who took up the game just nine months ago, defeated Irshad in straight games for his first mini cadet boys title.

In the inter-school team events, which were making their debut here, St. Mary’s, Alappuzha, blanked Don Bosco (Irinjalakuda) 3-0 and won the under-19 boys title.

The results (inter-school team championship):

Boys: Under-19 final: St. Mary’s, Alappuzha bt Don Bosco, Irinjalakuda 3-0 (Dany B. Daniel bt Angelo Porathur 11-6, 9-11, 11-4, 8-11, 14-12; B.Rahul bt Ranjin Das 11-6, 11-6, 11-5; Thomas Cherian bt Freddy Thomas 11-8, 11-7, 11-4). Semifinals: Don Bosco bt Thariyode HSS 3-1.

Under-17: Semifinals: Navy Children School, Kochi bt St Joseph’s, Tvm 3-1; Don Bosco, Ijk bt BMS, Pkd 3-0.

Girls: Under-17 semifinals: Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kochi bt HSS, Thariyode 3-0; SHEM, Idk bt Carmel, Tvm 3-2.

Under-14 semifinals: Don Bosco, Ijk bt HRS, Idk 3-0; GUPS, Wyd bt Choice, Kochi 3-0.

Open events: Mini cadet boys final: Mishal Dilawar (RSC) bt Anas Irshad (AYTTA) 13-11, 11-7, 13-11. Semifinals: Dilawar bt Goutham S. Kumar (MJI) 12-10, 9-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5; Irshad bt Atul Philip (RSC) 11-5, 11-0, 11-5.

Cadet girls final: Aneesha Ganesh (HRC) bt Ann Mary Paul (DB) 11-5, 7-11, 11-5, 12-10. Semifinals: Ann Mary bt Gia Anna George (AYTTA) 5-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9; Aneesha Ganesh bt Denna Rose Francis (DB) 11-3, 11-5, 11-5.

Don Bosco School’s ‘A’ posts win

The host Don Bosco School’s ‘A’ team defeated St. Thomas (Pala) 62-49 in a boys’ match of the 25th Don Bosco all-Kerala inter-school basketball tournament at the Don Bosco indoor stadium in Irinjalakuda on Friday.

The results: Don Bosco ‘A’ (Irinjalakuda) 62 (Amit Sebastian 15, Shebin Shamsudeen 13) bt St. Thomas (Pala) 49 (S. Dileep 17); Kristu Jyoti HSS (Chenganassery) 54 (Christio Joy 18) bt Don Bosco ‘B’ (Irinjalakuda) 48 (V. Nikhil 23); Don Bosco (Vaduthala) 40 (Nithin Gostre 11) bt St. John’s Bethany HSS (Kunnamkulam) 23 (M. Tony 11).

Kurian, Thulasi win

Thomas Kurian and P.C. Thulasi won the men’s and women’s singles titles in the TKV memorial State-ranking badminton tournament at the Jimmy George indoor stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

The results (all finals): Men: Singles: Thomas Kurian bt Antony K. Jacob 21-17, 21-9; Doubles: Jaseel P. Ismail & Sanave Thomas bt Thomas Kurian & Joy T. Antony 21-13, 21-18, 21-16.

Women: Singles: P.C. Thulasi bt Daya Elsa Jacob 21-19, 19-21, 21-13; Doubles: P.C. Thulasi & Daya Elsa Jacob bt M. Sruthi & Nima Lakshmi 21-18, 21-17.

Selection trials

The trials to select the Ernakulam District under-22 cricket team will be held at the Tripunithura Palace Oval at 9 a.m. on August 9.

Players born or after September 1, 1986 and registered with the EDCA are eligible to attend the event.

The under-19 Ernakulam District team selection trials will be held at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on August 10. Players born on or after September 1, 1989 and registered with the EDCA are eligible.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Interested players are to report at the venue in whites and with own cricket kits.
