LUCKNOW: As the Special Investigation Team led by Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar took over investigation of the Domariaganj fake currency racket on Friday, the State Government decided in principle to recommend a CBI inquiry.

A request for a probe by the Central investigating agency was made to the Mayawati Government by the UP Police, which took the plea that the case was within the purview of a CBI probe. The grand total of fake currency recovered from the currency chest of the Domariaganj branch of the State Bank of India, meanwhile, reached Rs.1.42 crore on Friday with the detection of another Rs.17 lakh in counterfeit money during the day, according to Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order and STF) Brij Lal. Until Thursday, fake currency worth Rs.1.25 crore had been recovered from the currency chest.

The Special Investigation Team comprising a Deputy Superintendent of Police and inspectors reached Domariaganj in Siddharthnagar district on Friday and registered a fresh case after the existing case was transferred to it by the Siddharthnagar police. Mr. Lal said here that a detailed investigation would be conducted by the SIT, including a clinical examination of the counterfeit currency recovered from the Domariaganj branch of SBI.

Till Thursday, a team of Reserve Bank of India officials had counted Rs.2.40 crore of an estimated Rs.184 crore in the bank’s currency vault.
