Marigowda remembered for commitment to horticulture

Staff Reporter

Horticulture Day was organised as part of his birth anniversary celebrations

Bangalore: “M.H. Marigowda was the “pitamaha” of the horticultural movement in the State. He was a visionary, who was way ahead of his time. It is sad to note that the trees and plants that he painstakingly grew are being felled and destroyed in the name of development,” said M. Guruswamy, retired officer from the Horticulture Department.

He was speaking at the “Horticulture Day” function organised as part of M.H. Marigowda’s birth anniversary celebrations here on Friday. The function was organised by the Department of Horticulture and Dr. M.H. Marigowda Prathistana.

Mr. Guruswamy urged Horticulture Minister S.K. Bellubbi, who was the chief guest on the occasion, to bring the farms and gardens of the department under the purview of the Act that protects Lalbagh.

The Minister said that he would discuss the issue with the Chief Minister.

Fifteen retired officials of the department, including B. Gopala, N.R. Vishwanath, M.T.R. Cruz, S.T. Devaiah, T.K. Kambaiah, L. Hanumaiah, Gangaswamy, D. Devajayakumar, N.M. Shivashakarappa, Mohammed Habibulla and P. Venugopal, were felicitated.
