BHUBANESWAR: The State government has enhanced the duty call up allowances to home guards towards duty period of eight hours or more per day from Rs. 75 to Rs. 90 with effect from August 5. Some 15,708 home guards in the State will be benefited by this measure and the government will spend an additional amount of more than Rs. 5 crores per year. The home guards are a voluntary organisation and serve as an auxiliary to the police force and are utilised in election duty and law and order duty along with the policemen. Every year a large number of home guards are deployed in car festival at Puri. Besides, they are also engaged in various jails/sub-jails and fire stations to augment the shortfall of jail warders and firemen. Home guards are also deployed in various Public Sector Undertakings on payment basis.
