Congress to identify BC aspirants

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Leaders from the Backward Classes in the Congress have started pinning a lot of hopes on the statement given by APCC president D. Srinivas that the party would give due share to weaker sections in the coming elections.

In the 2004 elections, the party had given tickets to 75 candidates, of whom 23 won. The recent Cabinet decision to pass a resolution in the Assembly favouring 33 per cent quota for the BCs might give further fillip to their efforts.

Party sources said plans are afoot to identify at least four party men from each constituency. Though the final selection would be done by the PCC chief and the Chief Minister, the list will certainly give them a fair idea about the potential candidates.

The BC leaders reason that in some districts not even a single BC candidate was considered for the ticket in the general seats. Agreeing that it was a fact, OBC department chairperson J. Chittaranjan Das said: “During the recent visit of Rahul Gandhi, we submitted a memorandum urging the party to allot 25 per cent seats in each district to the BCs.”

The BC leaders intend to bring pressure on the party to give more tickets to the weaker sections in the wake of rival Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu declaring that 100 seats would be given to BCs.
