MADURAI: A 15-day training course on human rights for college students was inaugurated here on Thursday by former Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court M. Karpaga Vinayagam.

Society for Community Organisation (SOCO) Trust organised the camp.

Addressing the inaugural session, he said that students should look forward to achieving great things in life and work single-mindedly to overcome obstacles.

“If you are keen, you will be daring to do great things,” he told the students, adding that they should also develop a service-and-sacrifice attitude. Defeat was only victory delayed.

Earlier, Director of SOCO Trust, A. Mahaboob Batcha, said that India, the land of ahimsa movement, should ban capital punishment.

Nine convicts in Tamil Nadu had been sentenced to death. The Government should commute their death sentence to life, he added .

Human Rights Cell Secretary S. Selvagomathy said that the programme had been split into two as more than 150 students from 10 colleges had evinced interest in participation.

It would be held between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Madurai Bar Association president P. Dharmaraj and High Court advocate R. Gandhi also spoke.
