TUMKUR: Water from the Hemavathy river, which was released into the Tumkur canal on August 4, reached here on Thursday. According to Chief Engineer of the Hemavathy Canal Zone B.G. Gurupadaswamy, the irrigation consultation committee met at Gorur in Hassan district on July 29 and decided to release water into the canal. The water should have been released as early as June 1. Sources said that half of the 18 tmcft of water in the reservoir has been allocated for Tumkur and Mandya districts. About 1,800 cusecs of water was let into the canal, of which, 500 cusecs had been diverted to Nagamangala in Mandya district. Tumkur district has an annual entitlement to 35 tmcft of water. Water can be distributed till the tail-end of the canal (Kunigal), only if the district got a minimum of 18 tmcft of water between June and November. The water reached Bugudanahalli Tank on the outskirts of Tumkur on Thursday. The tank is the balancing reservoir for supply of drinking water to Tumkur. C. Manjappa, Superintending Engineer of Hemavathy Tumkur Canal Division said it would not be possible to draw the entire allocation of 9 tmcft of water.
