Meeting on classical tag for Telugu inconclusive

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The meeting of the Linguists’ Committee on the issue of according classical status to Telugu language, which was held in New Delhi on Friday, ended inconclusively.

The meeting was held in the backdrop of a petition filed by a private individual in the Madras High Court. The petitioner contended that those appointed on the panel by the Central Sahitya Akademi to go into the issue, were not scholars and, therefore, it should be reconstituted.

A.B.K. Prasad, Chairman, State Official Languages Commission, said the Madras High Court had asked the Union government to respond on the petition. – Special Correspondent After the meeting, Bh. Krishna Murthy, a Telugu member of the committee, however, said the committee would submit its recommendations to the Central Sahitya Akademi.
