Federal agency plan discussed
Vinay Kumar
NEW DELHI: A high-level meeting of top police and civil officials was held here on Friday to review the security situation in the country and explore the possibility of forming a federal agency to deal with crimes having inter-State and cross-border ramifications.
The meeting of Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police discussed the recent terror attacks in Bangalore and Ahmedabad and the pattern emerging out of the serial blasts that claimed over 50 lives.
In view of increased security for the coming Independence Day, several Chief Secretaries and DGPs skipped the meeting. These included officials from Gujarat, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, informed sources said.
The meeting was chaired by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and attended by senior officials of the Ministry responsible for internal security, besides representatives of the States, official sources said.
At the meeting, the Centre also made an offer of training State police personnel in the special branch by Intelligence Bureau officials.
The proposal to set up a federal crime fighting agency is opposed by several Chief Ministers, as law and order remains a State subject.
