Rajesh triumphs

HYDERABAD: Rajesh Choudhary clinched the Standard category crown of the Laser National championships that concluded at the Hussain Sagar on Friday. The Army Yachting Node (AYN) yachtsman after two discards had a tally of nine points, indicating he had finished first in seven races and second in another. Teammates B.K. Rout and Jasvir Singh were second and third with 16 and 21 points.

Gajender Singh emerged champion in the smaller rig with 14 points, followed by Parvinder Singh on 24 and Sukhvir Singh with 25, signalling a sweep in the two aforementioned categories by the Mumbai-based AYN. In the concluding race of the Standard fleet, Rout ruled the roost in the first triangle, with Jasvir Singh placed third. On the loop’s upwind leg, Rout and Choudhary were caught in a tacking tussle, wherein the latter stole a march over the former. Roles were thus reversed into the second triangle, ‘Chow’ steaming ahead with Rout hot on his heels.

Status quo was maintained for the subsequent legs, Chow ducking under the swinging boom each time Rout chose to change tack. Both leant over their gunnels, their backs almost parallel to the murky water as they stretched every fibre of their hiking straps in an absorbing race to the finish.

The final placings:

Laser Standard: 1. Rajesh Choudhary 9 (AYN) 2. B.K. Rout 16 (AYN) 3. Jasvir 21 (AYN).

Laser Radial: 1. Gajender Singh 14 (AYN) 2. Parvinder Singh 24 (AYN) 3. Sukhvir Singh 25 (AYN).

Laser 4.7: 1. Xerxes Bamboat 14 (RBYC) 2. Sarav Rajavelu 16 (TNSA) 3. Aman Mohan Vyas 27 (NSS).

The results:
