KATHMANDU: The chances of forming a national government ended on Friday as the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoists) failed to muster consensus among the major political parties. “It’s sad that we could not forge consensus on the given time,” said Maoist Chairman Prachanda on Friday. President Ram Baran Yadav had given the largest party, the Maoists, one week’s time to form government of national consensus, but on August 5, the Maoists asked for three more days. The new deadline ended on Friday. “The parties could not build consensus on the issues of portfolio of the new government and its Common Minimum Programme,” said Mr. Prachanda after a crucial meeting with other three major parties — Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum. Meanwhile, Minister for Peace and Reconstruction and a Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Paudel said they (Congress) wanted to address the issue of power distribution, a common minimum programme and building an environment of trust. Like the Maoist Chairman, Mr. Paudel also said the process of forging consensus would continue.
