Cabinet refers right to education Bill to GoM
Anita Joshua
NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Friday decided to refer the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Bill, 2008 to a Group of Ministers after questions were raised about funding for this legislation that seeks to operationalise the Fundamental Right to Education enacted in 2002.
The GoM, according to Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal, will be headed by Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh. Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Mr. Sibal and the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, will be its members.
Barring Mr. Sibal, the three other members of the GoM were part of the four-member High Level Group set up by the Prime Minister in 2005 to pare down the financial estimate provided by a committee of the Central Advisory Board of Education for operationalising the Fundamental Right.
