Ganjam district has the reputation of being a traditional grooming point of weightlifters. One of the oldest gymnasiums for weight lifting in the state, the Veer Hanuman Club is part of the sport heritage of the city. Till date the city and Ganjam district has produced great wightlifting talents including the recent shooting stars like Tikina Gopal and Ranu Mohanty. It was the place in Orissa where women’s weightlifting was introduced for the first time in Orissa. Torrential rains could not dampen the spirit of the participants although its start was delayed. The competitions continued till late evening. Veteran weightlifters from all major weightlifting clubs of the city took part in this event to cheer up the budding talents. Thirty boys and 12 girls took part in this competition.
