E.V. Velu TIRUVANNAMALAI: About six lakh people benefited from 398 medical camps conducted so far by the State government under the ‘Varumun Kappom Thittam’ in Tiruvannamalai in the last four years, Food Minister E.V. Velu has said. He was inaugurating an operation theatre and the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Day celebrations at the PHC in Akkur in Anakkavur panchayat union in Tiruvannamalai district on Friday. Mr. Velu said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had launched the Varumun Kappom scheme to make the doctors and para-medical staff visit villages, diagnose and treat the ailments of people, thus obviating the need for the villagers to travel to urban areas. While the government has planned to conduct 415 medical camps in the villages in Tiruvannamalai under, 398 camps have so far been conducted. While six lakh people benefited from these camps, 1,800 people have been referred to secondary and tertiary care hospitals for further treatment. A total of 26,579 pregnant women in Tiruvannamalai district have benefited under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Financial Assistance Scheme, under which Rs.6,000 was given to each of them, Mr. Velu said. He distributed financial assistance totalling Rs. 14, 94,400 to 420 pregnant mothers under the scheme, financial assistance totalling Rs.6.15 lakh to 111 farmers under the farmers’ protection scheme, financial assistance sanction orders to 10 women under the aged spinsters assistance scheme and assistance of Rs.15, 000 each to 10 girls under Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammayar Marriage Assistance Scheme. He also distributed bicycles to 300 students belonging to the Backward Classes and Most Backward Classes. M. Rajendran, Tiruvannamalai Collector, presided over the function. K.S.T. Suresh, Deputy Director of Health Services, Cheyyar, welcomed the gathering. Alathur A.J. Srinivasan handed over to the Minister Rs. 1 lakh for the construction of a compound wall for the PHC in Akkur under the ‘Namakku Naame Thittam.’ S.P. Jayaraman, Vandavasi MLA, and M. Ravi, chairman, Anakkavur panchayat union, handed over a cold storage unit to the PHC. P.R. Malarvizhi, Block Medical Officer, Akkur, proposed a vote of thanks.
