Meet of Controllers, Registrars soon Courses to begin simultaneously KASARAGOD: A unified academic calendar for all universities in the State is on the anvil. The decision was taken at meeting of Vice-Chancellors of all universities in the State held in the presence of Education Minister M.A. Baby in Thiruvananthapuram on August 5, according top sources in higher education sector. The University Grants Commission had given a direction in this regard earlier. A meeting of Controllers of Examination and Registrars of various universities in the State would be held soon to discuss the proposal and get the clearance. The State Higher Education Secretary had been entrusted with the responsibility of convening the meeting. The unified academic calendar would be introduced based on the decision of that meeting, according to the sources. The introduction of unified academic calendar would ensure that courses in all universities in the State would begin simultaneously and examinations would also be held at the same time. A unified academic calendar would be of help to students as it would enable them to apply for higher courses of different universities at the same time after passing from one university. Though the meeting of Vice-Chancellors held in the capital approved the suggestion to introduce unified calendar, some of the participants noted that the universities in different part of the State plan courses and conduct examinations based on local conditions and that would have to be altered once the unified calendar comes into existence. Sources also noted that the meeting also discussed revision of syllabus and modernisation of pedagogy and agreed on a revision. The changes in the syllabus would match the changes introduced in the syllabus in the schools of the State up to Plus Two level. The meeting noted that the present syllabus in universities had become outdated. The meeting had also decided to strictly implement UGC norms for appointment of teachers in unaided colleges in the State also. Though the government had earlier given direction to unaided colleges to ensure their implementation, they had not been implementing the norms strictly.
