THE MAHATMA REMEMBERED: Schoolchildren pay their respects to the Mahatma on the occasion of Quit India anniversary in Bangalore on Saturday. BANGALORE: The 66th anniversary of the Quit India Movement was observed in Bangalore on Saturday and different organisations and political parties held variety programmes to commemorate the historic occasion. Participating in the Quit India Day organised at the Congress Bhavan, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council V.S. Ugrappa appealed to the Congress workers to take a pledge on the “historic day” to fight against increasing acts of terrorism. “The Congress workers, who have the legacy of freedom struggle, should fight against external and internal forces that are trying to destabilise the economy and cause social unrest,” he said. The youth should understand the history and learn from the mistakes of the past to take the country forward. “It is an irony that those who were cosy with British and those who were involved in the assassination of the Mahatma Gandhi are now having an upper hand in the country,” Mr. Ugrappa said. The former Union Minister and MLC M.V. Rajashekaran, the former ministers, D.K. Shivakumar and Kagodu Thimmappa, and Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Committee president and MLA Krishna Byregowda spoke. addressed the gathering. Mr. Shivakumar urged the Congress workers to strengthen the party in the State and bring it back to power. Mr. Shivakumar cut a cake to mark the foundation day of the Youth Congress, which was observed on August 9 every year. All-religion prayers were held as part of another function organised by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to commemorate the Quit India movement, in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Mahatma Gandhi Road. Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda and Gandhian and former minister V.S. Krishna Iyer, who garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, and BBMP Commissioner S. Subramanya participated in the programme. Akhila Bharatha Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane observed the anniversary of the Quit India movement with the slogan “let communalism, terrorism and poverty exit from India.” The organisation, which held a public meeting in front of Sir Puttanna Chetty Town Hall, pointed out how the country was again becoming a victim of imperialism because of the nuclear deal and hegemony of multinational companies. Civil Area Freedom Fighters’ Association and Mother Teresa Forum observed Quit India Day by holding a public meeting at Coles Park.
