Correspondent

KORAPUT: Culminating with Quit India Movement Day today, tribals from 21 villages in and around Maliparvat region of Semiliguda block in Koraput district have asked Hindalco, the company, engaged in mining of bauxite from Maliparvat, to quit the region. Neither severe rain nor the prevention by the district administration to hold any meeting near the mountain could stop people from raising their voice against the company, Arjun Khilo, Secretary, Maliparvat Surakhya Samiti said.

While the administration had imposed a ban on conducting any meeting near the mountain, tribals from all the 21 affected villages had gathered in a deserted poultry farm at Rajnaguda of Pakjhola panchayat in Semiliguda block. It was the demonstration of solidarity, said Bhagavan Muduli, president, Koraput District Sarpanch Association added.

Moreover this was also treated as the first ever meeting of various associations and unions in the State those who were working on the issues of displacement, rehabilitation and mining coming together in this part of the State, Prafulla Samantray, president, Lokshakti Abhiyan said. The meeting had also resolved today to go for an all out agitation against the mining process from August 25 preventing the company or anyone else to enter the mountain region to carryout the mining activities.
