Heavy rains claim one in State

Staff Reporter

More in store says Meteorological Department

BHUBANESWAR: Heavy rain lashed over several parts of the State under influence of a low pressure area that formed over Bay of Bengal.

The rain resulted in flash floods at many places while one person was reported to have been killed.

Local Indian Meteorological Department sources forecast more rains as Friday’s low pressure area had turned into a well marked atmospheric system and was all likely to concentrate into a depression.

The well marked low pressure area was detected over northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining to coastal Orissa and Gangetic West Bengal on Saturday.

Body recovered

One body was recovered and one went missing when a bus carrying 22 passengers was swept away in water in Rayagada district.

Interior pockets of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir and Rayadada had received heavy downpour during past 24 hours.

At Madan Rampur, highest 218 mm rainfall was recorded while Baliguda received 124 mm rainfall.

Water level in Vamshadhara river was rising fast. According to State Water Resource Department, river water was flowing over danger mark at Kashinagar.

The precipitation at Bolangir was recorded at 127 mm and Bhawanipatna experienced 123 mm rainfalls. As a result, rainwater flowed 4 ft over the Hati bridge.

Kalahandi emergency officer B. N. Sethi, however, said the water had receded very fast due to Hati River’s large catchment area.

Although Bhubaneswar and Cuttack did not receive heavy rainfall, there had been intermittent rains since Friday.

The inclement weather that had been persisting for over 30 hours had affected business community with people preferred to stay indoors.
