KOCHI: Despite excelling in the fields of academics and technology, India has failed to utilise this knowledge properly for want of funds, Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan has said. He was speaking after presenting the Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) (SOFT (I)) Biennial Award to S.Z. Qasim, a scientist specialising in marine fisheries and oceanography, here on Saturday. “While the developed nations are exploiting the rich resources of Arabian Sea, we lag behind because of the high cost involved in implementing projects. Countries like Canada have made huge investments in fisheries,” he said. In his reply, Dr. Qasim said that making fish available as a commodity for trade across the nation is one of the successes of the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT). He also recollected his 10-year-long association with the State. Dr. Qasim is presently vice-chairman of the Society for Indian Ocean Studies. The SOFT (I) is a forum of researchers, technologists, academicians and administrators in fisheries and related fields. The SOFT (I) award is presented biennially to eminent scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the field. Dr. Qasim is the eighth winner of the award. K. Devadasan, president of SOFT (I) and director of CIFT, presided. E.G. Silas, former Vice-Chancellor, Kerala Agricultural University, offered felicitations. M.K. Mukundan, head of Quality Assurance and Management division of CIFT, introduced the SOFT (I) award and P.K. Vijayan, secretary, and Saly N. Thomas, joint secretary, of SOFT (I), spoke.
