CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday announced that the Avadi Municipality would be accorded a higher grade that would place it above the municipalities and just below the Corporations.

“It will be a Peru Nagaratchi,” he said in response to a request made by Congress Legislature Party leader D. Sudarssanam, who wanted special grade municipality status to Avadi.

Inaugurating various schemes including Rs 104.84-crore drinking water scheme and Rs. 158.05-crore underground sewerage scheme for Avadi, the Chief Minister said files seeking upgradation for the municipality was with him.

Dismissing the allegations that lakhs of files were piling up on his table, Mr. Karunanidhi said he disposed of files on day to day basis.

He said if he was not able to complete the work during the day time, he would call the officials to his house and work till 10 p.m.

“This is the practice I have been following since 1967. I never allow the files to rest. I will make them run. I never allowed red tapism,” he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi also praised Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin for effectively implementing the Anna Marumalarachi Scheme and bringing developments to the rural areas on a par with the urban centres.

“The entire country is appreciating the scheme,” he said.

Mr. Stalin said that if Tamil Nadu could achieve the growth rate of 10.26 per cent, the credit should go to the effective functioning of self-help groups.

The Chief Minster also laid foundation stones for as many as 218 works at a cost of Rs. 274 crore, including a new building for the municipality at a cost Rs 3.20 crore. He also distributed house pattas to 3,000 people.
