Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Speakers at a symposium on ‘Reconstructing the Past: 1857 in South India’ highlighted the developments that took place that year in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala as part of the freedom struggle.
Historians and speakers, who spoke at a decennial function of the Centre for Contemporary Studies and the 57th Foundation Day of the Bharat Sewak Samaj, its affiliate organisation, explained how leaders in south India played a key role in the revolt of 1857. There was an anti-British uprising even at Triplicane, in the Madras Presidency. There were attacks on the Presidency and uprising in coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Led by B.S. Raghavan, former Policy Advisor to the United Nations, speakers commended the contribution of the Bharat Sewak Samaj and the Centre for Contemporary Studies for bringing together a unique blend of different types of talents to educate the masses on vital issues.
