MADURAI: Antibiotic medicines prescribed by doctors to patients, particularly children, have come under the review of an expert committee to prevent unwanted ‘overdose and misuse.’ A committee headed by Saradha Suresh, Director of Institute of Child Health and Research Centre, Egmore, is reviewing the ‘antibiotic protocol’ in the wake of patients becoming resistant to drugs because of excess prescription by doctors. “We have commenced the review process and the committee will come out with a final report by March 2009. We may advise hospitals against prescribing excessive antibiotics both for children and adults, who come for treatment,” Dr. Saradha Suresh told The Hindu here on Saturday. Recommendations of the Infectious Diseases Committee would be applicable to both government and private hospitals. ExpensiveShe observed that certain antibiotic drugs were expensive but patients had to buy them once they were prescribed.
