Law college issue: State to implead itself before apex court

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The government has said it will take steps to implead itself before the Supreme Court in a case relating to the setting up of a law college by a deemed university in Thanjavur.

In a statement here, PWD and Law Minister Durai Murugan said when the university sought permission from the Bar Council of India to start the college, the latter said a ‘no objection certificate’ should be obtained from the State government.

Challenging this, the university moved the Madras High Court, which said that such a certificate was not necessary.

On appeal, a Division Bench confirmed the order. The council preferred an SLP before the Supreme Court, which declined to stay the High Court order, stating that the question as to whether a deemed university should obtain a ‘no objection certificate’ could be decided later.

In this situation, the BCI granted permission for starting the college subject to the final outcome of the SLP.

In the interest of students, the State government would take steps to implead itself in the case.

Condemning police action on students of Tirunelveli Law College, who were protesting against the starting of the law college, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Saturday said permission should not be given for starting a private law college.
