Hibiscus gardens at hill shrine

Tara Tarini Development Board plans to collect as many species as possible


The flowers are believed to be the best offering to the deities

The plant is a large genus having more than

BERHAMPUR: Two large hibiscus gardens are being set up at the Tara Tarini hill shrine in Ganjam district to house all possible species of the flowering plant.

The project has been taken up by the Tara Tarini Development Board (TTDB) with the help of the Berhampur forest division. According to the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), southern division, Satyabrata Sahu, who also happens to be the chairman of the TTDB, these two hibiscus gardens would come up at the foot and the top of the hill. It may be noted that hibiscus flowers are believed to be best offering to deities of goddess. Till now 25 varieties of hibiscus have been planted in the gardens, which are being groomed. It may be noted that hibiscus which is called ‘Mandara’ in Oriya is a large genus having more than 200 species. They grow in warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. The hibiscus plants include both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, woody shrubs and small trees. Their flowers are of different colours ranging from white to deep red of different shapes and sizes. The white hibiscus is considered to be having medicinal properties in Ayurveda. Various concoctions of the root of this plant are believed to cure many ailments. The TTDB plans to acquire as many species of the flowering plant available in the country to make these hibiscus gardens at the hill shrine unique in the country.

The TTDB has decided to take up thirty different developmental works in the hill shrine in recent months. The drinking water project is expected to be completed within a week.
