PUDUCHERRY: Providing a platform for artisans from across the country, the Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, in association with the Pudumai Handicrafts Artisans Cooperative Society, Puducherry, will conduct a 10-day exhibition of crafts from Monday. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will inaugurate the bazaar at Gandhi Thidal. The exhibition, Gandhi Shilp Bazaar, is aimed at enabling craftsmen to directly sell products, thereby eliminating middle men. After Puducherry, the bazaar will be held at Mysore, Coimbatore and Hyderabad, the Director of Southern Region, Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Alak. R. Chaudhuri, said on Sunday. “More than 150 craftsmen from all over the country will display their creations at the exhibition. For the first time, around 30 self-help groups will take part in the bazaar. This is to create cluster awareness and promote the concept to the groups,” he said. Crafts including Madhubani paintings of Bihar, phulkari from Punjab, tie and dye, bead works from Rajasthan, zari zutti from Haryana, worli paintings, leather chappals from Maharashtra, lac bangles from Madhya Pradesh, art metal works from Uttar Pradesh, jute and kantha embroidery from West Bengal, dry flower items from north eastern States and crafts from southern States such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Pondicherry would be displayed.
