Rainfall intensifies in Kodagu

Rivers overflowing; schools to remain closed for two days

Madikeri: The Cauvery and the Lakshmanateertha are overflowing and road links in several parts of Madikeri and Virajpet taluks are cut off following heavy rainfall in Kodagu on Sunday, according to reports received here.

The Cauvery water has submerged the Bhagamandala-Madikeri road and the Bhagamandala-Aiyyangeri road at the Sangama in Bhagamandala town. In Virajpet taluk, the Nittur-Balele road has been submerged in the Lakshmanateertha water.

Many parts of Kodagu, including Madikeri, remained without electricity on Sunday as power lines snapped owing to tree fall on the Madikeri-Sunticoppa road. In the last 24 hours (between 8 a.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday), Talacauvery received the highest rainfall of 180 mm and Bhagamandala received 130 mm, adding to the level in the Cauvery. Elsewhere, in Madikeri taluk, Napoklu received 96 mm rainfall and Madikeri city - 93.2 mm; in Somwarpet taluk, Somwarpet town received 118 mm rainfall and Shanivarasante - 77 mm; and in Virajpet taluk, Srimangala received 133.8 mm rainfall, Kutta - 125 mm, Gonicoppa - 70 mm and Ponnampet received 60 mm rainfall.

The Harangi reservoir, near Kushalnagar, is full and the water-level on Sunday stood at 2,858.09 ft as against the full reservoir level of 2,859 ft. The water-level is increasing following copious rainfall in and around the reservoir. Inflow on Sunday morning was 7,602 cusecs and outflow into the river was 6,298 cusecs.

Holiday

The Deputy Director of Public Instructions, Mohammad Basheer, has announced holiday for primary schools, high schools and anganwadi centres for two days from Monday on account of heavy rainfall.
