Fire safety on trains

The tragic fire accident in Gautami Express could, perhaps be avoided had there been temperature sensing remote devices in bogies. These help stop the train by automatic application of brake when the temperature exceeds the preset value. Also, fire sensors can be fitted in two or three locations of a coach as the signal will go to the driver who in turn stops the train. Railway engineers can organise seminars and meetings on the subject and coaches can be manufactured with new design or modified to include the gadgets for fire safety.

Power cuts during night

Since last week, there have been unscheduled power cuts during nights. It particularly affects the aged persons and children who need proper sleep to run good health, and also students. Whenever the power goes off, mosquitoes begin to bite which also leads to severe illness. I appeal to the authorities to avoid power cut during nights.

District governments

President of Lok Satta Party, Jayaprakash Narayan who is a former IAS Officer, came out with a proposal to set up district-level governments with a ‘Prime Minister’ and Council of Ministers. Though laudable on paper, its implementation is fraught with serious problems. With the steep decline in the ethical and moral values, there will be chaos in administration, with corruption, nepotism and favouritism reaching the peak resulting in the people Below Poverty Line will go further down. Our people, especially the politicians, have to change their outlook to work for the nation. The proposal, however, will enable a vast majority of leaders to distribute the spoils equally at local level.

Restore 48A bus

Recently, the city buses on route no: 48 A stopped coming up to the terminal point in Madhavadhara VUDA Colony at Top Water Tank. It was because of digging of the road at this point for underground drainage work. Though the road was relaid, the city bus is not going up to the terminus but stopping at a distance from the original stage, causing inconvenience to commuters, particularly aged persons and women during night.

Minimum balance

The policy of the government is to keep the banks within the reach of the common man and in tune with this, many banks have been accepting either Rs.500 or Rs.1,000 as minimum balance.

The ICICI Bank, on the contrary, is insisting a minimum balance of Rs.10,000 which is beyond the reach of many. I appeal to the ICICI bank to enable a common man to step into its corridors by fixing a low minimum balance.
