Overloaded trucks

Recently a truck overloaded with rice for public distribution system overturned on the Salem- Bangalore Highway causing great inconvenience to road users.

Police often warn transport operators against overloading.

Yet overloading seems to be the norm rather than the exception.

Traffic police close their eyes to overloading.

Overloading, apart from causing serious accidents, also damages roads.

Again, trucks have been found to use kerosene meant for public distribution.

Many of the trucks are in poor condition and inexperienced and often drunken drivers drive them.

The police should keep a vigil on the trucks.

This will prevent many accidents and also nip in the bud crimes like smuggling and terrorist activities.

Traffic chaos

Recently in the Salem Railway Junction area, a lot of improvements were made, including shifting of electric poles and widening of the post office road stretch, to facilitate smooth flow of traffic.

However, indiscriminate stopping of the city buses in the corner leads to traffic jam occurring in both directions on the road.

Added to this chaos is the parking of scooters and cars on the sides of the road adjoining the Salem railway station.

Salem City police should immediately take necessary steps to shift the city bus stop a few metres away from the junction corner and prohibit parking of vehicles in front of the Salem Railway Junction.

Express trains

Express trains have been started from Salem to Egmore via Attur and Vridhachalam after gauge conversion.

Wayside stations such as Attur, Chinna Salem, Talaivasal and other stations do not have computer reservation facility.

Hence passengers from these places are likely to travel without reservation.

The railway authorities should attach more general compartments i.e. five bogies in front and five bogies in rear, two air-conditioned coaches and 10 reserved coaches, totalling 22, for the benefit of wayside station passengers.

No network

Kuranguchavadi (near Five Roads) in Salem is a fast developing area.

But Airtel users in this area are greatly inconvenienced because of lack of proper tower in their network.

Most of the customers are switching over to other company networks because of this problem.

The Airtel authorities should provide customers proper network facility without delay.
