Andhra Pradesh
While travelling from Puttur to Hyderabad by Egmore - Kachiguda Chennai Express I observed that information regarding arrival and departure of various trains from Puttur was being announced through the public address system in Tamil and English only. It is surprising to note that though Puttur railway station, town and its vicinity covering vast areas come under the purview of Andhra Pradesh, and the railway station under Southern Railway (Chennai), division. Travellers who board and alight the trains from Puttur are mostly Telugu people, hence the announcements should be made in Telugu also. E. Syamsundar, Madanapalle Usage of fluorescent lampsI would like to express my views on “Uttar Pradesh makes use of CFL mandatory in Government offices,” (The Hindu : dated July 22). Many states are reeling under power crisis due to deficiency in power generation. In view of this, the Uttar Pradesh Government decision to make the use of compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) mandatory in government buildings, aided institutions, corporations etc. is praise worthy. This will cut down the power consumption by about ten per cent, thereby reducing the cost of monthly electricity bills. G. Jagannadh, Anantapur Innovative farm practicesIt is gratifying to note that Mekala Lakshminarayana of to Revella village in Tadikonda mandal bagged several national awards for his new and inspiring innovative farming practices (The Hindu, July 2 under the Trendsetter) The department of Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh and ANGRAU should arrange programmes so that our farmers could learn new products developed by Lakshminarayana on many crops. The information generated should be effectively disseminated for the benefit of other farmers in the State. G. Azeemoddin, Anantapur Useless deedsThe first worst thing the agitators do is damaging public and private assets. Do they think that agitation means damaging, vandalising and violence? What is the use of doing such useless deeds? Who will be the sufferers ? Do they want to give a new meaning to “hartal-dharna-rasta-rokho and strike?” In a nutshell what the protestors meant is “damage, violence and killing?” This dangerous trend needed to be changed immediately. Dinakar, Nandyal
