Kalpetta: A three-day medical camp for physically and mentally challenged children will be inaugurated by M.V. Shreyams Kumar, MLA, at Kalpetta SKMJ High School on Tuesday. The camp is being organised by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) under the Inclusive Education for Disabled Children (IEDC) project. According to a survey conducted by the SSA, there were as many as 5,324 children with physical and mental disabilities in Wayanad district, SSA Project officer E.P. Mohandas told news men here. Children up to the age of 14 will come under the purview of the IEDC project, Mr. Mohandas said. All children in the age group in the district, including those not attending schools, will be the beneficiaries of the project, he said. A survey will be conducted at the beginning of every academic year to identify children with disabilities. A medical check up ill be carried out and remedial measures will be taken, he said. These include counselling by experts, free supply of equipment and provision of suitable conditions in schools. The services of specially trained teachers will also be enlisted, Mr. Mohandas said. ScholarshipsAlso, children with more than 40 per cent disability will be given scholarships. The National Service Scheme of the Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, will ensure the service of doctors, NSS Programme Officer Dr Anitha Kumari said. The camps will also be held at Sarvajana High School at Sulthan Bathery on Wednesday and at Government UP School at Mananthavadi on Thursday. Conveyance will be arranged by the SSA, Mr. Mohandas added.
