Massive tree plantation drive planned in Namakkal

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: Namakkal district administration has planned to launch a massive tree plantation drive shortly. Over 1 crore tree saplings will be planted in various parts of the district during the drive.

Collector U. Sagayam, announcing this at a meeting held here recently, said that the administration had decided to plant the saplings on the banks of the Cauvery River, bunds of water bodies and water carrying channels and ‘poramboke’ lands.

Vacant lands near check dams and farm ponds, primary health centres, road sides, weekly and daily markets, premises of government and private industrial units, educational institutions and hospitals would be covered during the drive.

All vacant spaces near local body offices would be covered.

Over 10 lakh tree saplings would be planted on Gandhi Jayanthi which falls on October 2.

The administration has taken up this initiative with the objective to increase the forest cover and improve the environment in the district. School and college students, members of volunteer organisations and non-governmental organisations, National Service Scheme volunteers, employees of local bodies and officials of various government departments would be roped in for planting saplings.

Mr. Sagayam asked the animal husbandry department officials to insist each farmer to plant at least one tree sapling in his or her village.

He called upon the people and officials to work together to make the drive a success.

Non-governmental organisations should join hands with the administration to raise the level of awareness among people on tree plantation and environmental protection.

The NGOs and officials should assist the administration in making this initiative a people’s movement, he appealed. District Forest Officer Ashish Kumar Srivasta, District Revenue Officer G. Govindaraj, District Rural Development Agency project officer P. Renugadevi and senior officials were present.
