Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: A national workshop on public-private partnership in combating tuberculosis, which concluded here on Sunday, expressed concern over the emerging challenges in treating the dreaded disease that claims over three lakh victims in India every year. Mohammed Abas, national president of the Indian Medical Association, inaugurated the workshop. Presiding over the workshop, L.S. Chauhan, doctor, said the unscientific use of medicines was responsible for the emergence of the drug-resistant strain of TB. This, he warned, will pose a serious threat to the management of the disease in India. The Revised National TB Control Programme is designed to tackle this threat. R.V. Asokan, national coordinator, IMA, said the private sector had a key role to play in bringing TB under control in the country. As many as 110 delegates, including those from the World Health Organisation and the Bill Gates Foundation, participated.
