Thiruvananthapuram: Participants in a workshop on safe injection practices here on Sunday stressed the need for a heightened awareness among the medical fraternity and society in general to safeguard themselves against the threats posed by unhealthy practices in the procedure. Speakers observed that five to six billion injections were being administered annually in India, against an annual production of two billion syringes in the country. This, they said, indicates widespread mismanagement, negligence and unprofessional conduct. The workshop was organised by the Indian Association of Paediatrics (IAP) at the Government Medical College to create awareness and to train junior doctors and medical students on safe injection practices. Inaugurating the workshop, Dinesh Arora, Director, National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Kerala, said safe injection practices would be given top priority, under plans to ensure the safety of patients admitted to government hospitals in the State. Ramadas Pisharody, Principal, Medical College, presided over the inaugural function. Sachidananda Kammath, national convener, Safe Injection Practices, Indian Association of Paediatrics; M.A. Mathew, State convener; B. Jayakumar, Professor and Head of the Department of General Medicine, Medical College; and Ram Sharma, Managing Director, BD India Ltd.; handled the sessions. More than 100 delegates, including junior doctors and medical students, who attended the workshop took a safe injection oath.
