Battling elements: Mechanised fishing boats struggle to navigate their way through high waves in a rough sea in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as several parts of the State reeled under the spell of heavy rains and flood situations, Vizag woke up to a bright day on Sunday. While the city had been experiencing intermittent showers during the past two days, the skies opened up and the sun peeped out of a vapour of clouds and the day remained clear.

After a dull Saturday, beaches once again brimmed with activity as tourists and weekend visitors enjoyed the breezy evening by the Bay of Bengal.

All fears about the weather forecast plaguing the street vendors and corn sellers were dispelled. With visitors coming down in large numbers to the beach road, the vendors had a smile on their faces at the end of the day who had a roaring business.

Despite the rough sea and high tidal waves threatening to engulf the bobbling fishing boats, fishermen ventured into the waters in good strength in the hope of a good catch. Kailasagiri and Tenneti Park was teeming with people who came out with their families for an evening out. With festivals around the corner, Sunday also saw a good rush at the malls and shops offering attractive discounts.

Depression to weaken

The depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining the Orissa coast has moved inland and lay centred over the north interior Orissa, close to Keonjhar, as of 2.30 p.m. on Sunday. The system is likely to move a north-westerly direction and weaken gradually, according to a bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here late in the evening.

Under its influence, rain or thunder showers are likely to occur at a few places in the coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 24 hours. Strong surface winds with speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph likely along and off coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

The state of the sea is likely to range between ‘rough’ and ‘very rough’ and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

Chief amount of rainfall (in centimetres) recorded during the last 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Sunday are: Nuzvid: 17; Tiruvur: 13; Eluru and Paleru bridge: 12 each; Prakasam Barrage, Koyyalagudem, Amalapuram, Nandigama, Chintalapudi: 11 each; Tanuku: 10; Bhimavaram, Guntur and Kaikalur: 9 each; Mangalagiri, Tadepalligudem, Atchampet, Piduguralla, Tenali, Bhimadole, Koderu and Pathapatnam: 8 each and Vijayawada (Airport), Palasa and Gudivada: 7 each.
