Mathias wins

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Vikram Mathias was just two seconds slower than his Red Rooster Racing team mate Amitrajit Ghosh and Team MRF’s Gaurav Singh Gill in the Super Special Stages at the Gayathri Vihar Palace ground here on Sunday and that was enough for him to win the K-1000 title with a margin of 1 minute 29 seconds.

The Super Special stages were staged on a dirt track of 2km at the Palace ground. Designed to cater for spectator interest, the cars roared over the twisting track and raised a fair amount of dust. Vikram Mathias played it safe and did not want to spoil the good work of the past two days.

A second one-two finish for Red Rooster Racing was very satisfying especially as it was achieved in the team’s home town.

“This was the biggest win of my eight year driving career and my first in a K-1000 rally,” Vikram said. “The win would certainly boost the team’s confidence and it would emerge stronger and better for the rest of the rounds of the INRC,” he added.

The K-1000 was very satisfying for Sanket Shanbagh from team Winspeed of Hyderabad. Participating in the 1,600cc category, Sanket (co-driver Ramesh) were leading comfortably in the Rally of Mysore till disaster struck in the final transport section. The car skidded into a drain and Sanket lost out from winning on debut itself. Sanket was delighted to win in the 1600 cc class here.
