AMBUR: The government must to introduce voucher system for students to enable them to get admission in any of the preferred colleges to pursue higher education, G.Viswanathan, Chancellor, Vellore Institute of Technology University (VITU), said here on Sunday. Participating at the valedictory session of National Integration Camp for the National Service Scheme volunteers from various colleges across the country sponsored by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, he said the students through this system could be given an opportunity to pursue their higher education in any of the preferred colleges. Stating that Indian students were best in the world, he said the main problem that needed to be addressed was that many students were denied access to higher education. As per the statistics available only 8 per cent of the students pursued higher education. It was under these circumstances, the Nation Knowledge Commission recommended opening 1,500 new universities in a span of five years.
He said the travel allowance for students participating in the National Integration Camps was meagre. At present the students’ travel allowance had been increased from Rs.500 to Rs.750. The paltry allowance did not enable students from North Eastern States, Bihar and Chattisgarh to participate at the National Integration Camp. Earlier, certificates were distributed to the NSS volunteers who took part in the National Integration Camp. Nazar Mohammed, Secretary and Correspondent, Mazharul Uloom College, C.Veluswami, Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Vellore Region and K.Sivachandra Bose, Thiruvalluvar University, NSS Coordinator spoke.
