The Supreme Court in its every pronouncement of judgement on pension payment upholds the rightful claims of pensioners as their fundamental rights. But it is pathetic that this fundamental right is to be established on every occasion by the Supreme Court despite the fact that the Central and State Governments are always doing their lip service to the social cause of the pensioners. The society of the retired forest officers from Uttar Pradesh was forced to seek a direction of the Supreme Court for regular and prompt payment of pension (The Hindu, dated 03.08.2008). Once, the Supreme Court intervened and directed Port Trust, Chennai, to remove anomalies among their pensioners, the LIC revised and allowed 100 per cent neutralisation of dearness allowance for its pensioners from 01.08.1997. The LIC pensioners Association demands the LIC of India to allow this benefit for those retired prior to 01.08.1997. N. Kasilingam, Tuticorin. Delayed police verification report
Issue of passports have been unduly delayed, owing to inordinate delay in sending the police verification report by the Commissioner of police / Superintendent of Police to the Regional Passport Office. Consequently, foreign aspirants are affected. Apparently the RPO is not calling for police verification report periodically as a rule. Every month they should send the police verification report without fail. So that the process of passport issuance would not get delayed. M.A. Kaja, Udangudi. Improve bus facilitiesEral is an important commercial town in Tuticorin district. Many people from outside areas are visiting the town and local traders are frequently coming. But the town does not have proper bus services. In particular, there are no proper bus facilities to places such as Srivaikundam, Tirunelveli and Tiruchendur. Despite a number of petitions from the local people, no proper steps have been taken to improve bus facilities in the town. P. Senthil Saravana Durai,
Vazhavallan, Tuticorin district. Beneficial job melaA job mela conducted in Nagercoil recently is useful to several unemployed youths, who are wandering aimlessly and for girls to work as a springboard to success. Hitherto, students upon completion of their respective courses have to search for jobs in metros like Chennai and Bombay. Now companies are camping in Nagercoil to recruit as many persons as their companies require. Kanyakumari has many unemployed youths. Hence, such job melas may be conducted frequently. V. Kumar, Thekkurichy, Kanyakumari district.
