PUDUCHERRY: Activists of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) on Monday staged a protest demonstration near the Assembly complex demanding implementation of the Domestic Violence (Prevention) Act.

Led by the Puducherry territorial unit of the AIDWA K.Santhi, the activists raised slogans urging the Congress government to take action against persons who harassed women workers and employees at workplace.

They also urged the government to take immediate steps to streamline public distribution system and implementation of free liquefied gas supply scheme for people below the poverty line. Tamil Nadu State Committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) T.Murugan recalled the role played by the Left in enacting the law to prevent domestic violence.

The police in the Union Territory booked cases in such a way that those who indulged in violence against women were not punished, he said.

Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the CPI (M) V.Perumal said the infighting in the Cabinet had come in the way of implementing various schemes in the Union Territory. He also said free house site pattas should be distributed to the roofless. Vice president of the Tamil Nadu AIDWA unit S.Valantina said the demonstration was aimed at demanding implementation of the law against domestic violence and ending atrocities against them.
