SEEKING PROTECTION: Members of the Puducherry unit of IMA holding discussion with Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar in Puducherry on Monday. PUDUCHERRY: Functionaries of the Puducherry unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Monday submitted a memorandum to Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar demanding introduction of “strict laws to punish those indulging in violence against medical professionals”. A delegation comprising president of Government Medical Association G.S. Naidu, Senior vice president of Puducherry unit of IMA R. V. Krishna Kumar and its secretary K. Sivadasan met the Lieutenant Governor at Raj Nivas and appealed to him to pass a legislation to impose strict punishment to those indulging in violence against doctors. The memorandum cited the legislations introduced by the governments in States such as Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in this regard. These States had brought forward laws to punish those committing violence against doctors and damaging hospital properties, the memorandum said. The association said they were compelled to seek the support of the government as there had been an increase in the incidents of violence against doctors. “In spite of the best efforts of doctors, some patients cannot be saved and some of them suffer permanent disability. The relatives and friends in a few such cases take law into their hands and attack the doctors. They also damage the hospital property,” the memorandum said. Delay in introducing strict laws to punish offenders would push medical professionals to practice “defensive medicine and not to attend high risk cases,” the memorandum said.
