TIRUVANNAMALAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has issued orders for the establishment of a samathuvapuram comprising 100 houses at the cost of Rs.2.60 crore on a 10-acre site in S. Gudalur in Thandarambattu panchayat union in Tiruvannamalai district, according to Food Minister E.V. Velu. Distributing colour televisions (CTVs) and free cooking gas connections and stoves to beneficiaries in Nedungavadi, Kannakkandhal, Serappapattu, S. Gudalur, Thondamanur, Sadhakuppam and Madhura Unnamalaipalayam villages in Thandarambattu panchayat union on Saturday, Mr. Velu said that when the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government constructed Periyar Memorial Samathuvapurams at the rate of one each in the various Assembly constituencies during its 1996-2001 tenure, Thandarambattu constituency was left out. As soon as the DMK returned to power in 2006, the Chief Minister ordered the setting up of Samathuvapurams in all constituencies, which were left out. Houses would be allotted to the beneficiaries as per government rules. The Minister said that the government has allotted Rs.2000 crore for the public distribution system (PDS). A godown is to be constructed through the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation at a cost of Rs.35 lakh in Thandarambattu for storing essential commodities for supply under the PDS. The government distributed 25.35 lakh CTVs to beneficiaries throughout Tamil Nadu in the first and second phases at a cost of Rs.694 crores. Under the third phase, CTVs are now being distributed at a cost of Rs.250 crore. A total of 1,30,500 CTVs would be distributed to beneficiaries in Tiruvannamalai district before December end. Free house site pattas were distributed to more than three lakh beneficiaries in Tamil Nadu, including 36,226 in Tiruvannamalai district, he said. Mr. Velu distributed CTVs to 245 persons in Nedungavadi panchayat, 384 persons each in Kannakkandhal and Thondamanur panchayats, and to 527 persons in S. Gudalur panchayat. He also distributed free cooking gas stoves to 653 beneficiaries in K. Unnamalaipalayam. M. Rajendran, Collector of Tiruvannamalai presided. G. Thamarai, District Revenue Officer, M. Panneerselvam, chairman, Thandarambattu panchayat union and M.P. Giri, chairman, Tiruvannamalai district panchayat spoke.
