Meet on coastal zone management

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A consultative meeting on the coastal management zone notification, 2008, organised by the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) will be held at Rotary Bhavan in Panampilly Nagar on August 13.

Sebastian Paul, MP, will inaugurate the meeting. The programme is being supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

Objectives

The objectives of the consultation include creating awareness about Coastal Zone Management Notification 2008 by bringing out a local language version of the notification, a press release issued by the CEE said.

It will provide a platform for public opinion and thereby collect valuable inputs.

The inputs emerging from the consultations will be considered by the MoEF before finalising the Act.

Padma G., programme coordinator, requested all individuals and organisations working on coastal areas and related issues to attend the meeting and participate in the discussions.

They can provide comments, suggestions and objections on the occasion.

A Malayalam version of the notification is ready and will be given to the participants.

A similar meeting will be held at Thalassery on August 22.

The release issued by the CEE said that the MoEF had issued the Coastal Zone Management Notification in May.

New framework

This is a new framework for managing and regulating activities in the coastal and marine areas for conserving and protecting the coastal resources and coastal environment.

It is also meant for the protection of coastal population and structures from risk of inundation due to natural hazards and for ensuring that the livelihoods of coastal populations are strengthened.
