‘Set up horticultural varsity in Chitradurga’

Staff Correspondent

Chitradurga: The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene have demanded that the Government set up the proposed horticultural university in Chitradurga instead of Bagalkot.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, district president of the sangha Nulenoor Shankarappa said that Chitradurga district was more suitable than Bagalkot for the university.

Being a drought-prone district, Chitradurga had made a mark in dry-land horticulture. Several fruits such as papaya, sapota, pomegranate, banana and mosambi were being cultivated here and exported. Besides this, the district was located in the central part of the State.

‘Reconsider decision’

“Chitradurga district also has four agricultural farms and a research centre. Mentioning them, Mr. Shankarappa said agricultural farms were located at Raipur in Molakalmur, Nayakanahatti in Challakere taluk, Inalli in Chitradurga taluk and Babbur in Hiriyur taluk.

“Having such vast potential and resources, the Government should reconsider its decision of establishing the university in Bagalkot,” he said.

Vice-president of the sangha G.S. Ujjanappa said that in many ways the district was considered backward, but not in the field of horticulture. By adopting the dry-land horticulture system, farmers were growing fruits on over 10,000 hectares of land, vegetables on over 21,000 hectares and flowers on over 1,200 hectares of land.

The district also provided better transport facilities, as it was connected with national highways 4 and 13.

The university would not only help in the advancement of the district, but would also motivate local students to take up horticultural activities.

Vast land was also available here for the university, he said.
