Chitradurga: S.K. Basavarajan, MLA, has said the Scouts and Guides movement, which has so far been confined to urban areas, should be introduced in rural schools too. Speaking after inaugurating the district-level Scouts and Guides convention here on Monday, he said many students from rural areas never had the opportunity to be part of the Scouts and Guides. MandateHe said that in several countries, governments had made it mandatory for youths to join the defence forces for a few years. This helped them realise the importance of national security and social service. “As no such rule exists in India, the Scouts and Guides experience can be considered an alternative,” he said. Teachers’ roleMr. Basavarajan said the role of teachers was vital in encouraging students to participate in Scouts and Guides activities. In his address, vice-president of the district unit of the Bharat Scouts and Guides, M.K. Tajpeer, urged the Government to provide equal importance and benefits to Scouts and Guides, compared to those being offered to the National Cadet Corps (NCC) “NCC cadets get special benefits with regard to admission to colleges and for employment. This facility is not extended to members of the Scouts and Guides. The Government should consider both services on a par with each other,” he added. Deputy Director of Public Instruction L. Rangappa and district physical education officer Ramdas were present.
